Write Letters

Below is a sample letter that you can send to your government representative. You may also download a .doc version here.

Dear [name of government official],

Since Beijing was awarded the Olympics in 2001, rights groups have noted a rapid increase of human rights abuses in China. Reports by Amnesty International and the London Times corroborate the Chinese government’s determination to “clean up” all forms of dissent before the 2008 Olympics.

Hence, I am writing to urge you to help the victims by taking immediate steps to press China for change or face a boycott.

The global community expects the Olympic host to uphold the ideals of peace and friendship. China’s failure to keep its human rights promises in

the countdown to the Olympics clearly undermines these ideals in the worst possible way, but also shows a complete disregard for the suffering of countless victims at the hands of its tyrannical regime.

Such abuses include:

  • the persecution of Falun Gong and supporters (e.g. Gao Zhisheng, Li Hong)
  • hundreds of thousands of Chinese citizens held as political prisoners without charge or trial, including democracy activists, lawyers, human rights defenders, religious leaders, journalists, trade unionists, Tibetan Buddhists, Falun Gong, Muslim Uyghurs, ‚Äò‚Äòunofficial‚Äô‚Äô church members, environmental, health and reproductive rights activists and political dissidents;
  • Falun Gong prisoners of conscience who have been vivisected so that their organs could be sold to ‚Äútransplant tourists;‚Äù
  • people who have been evicted from their homes to make way for commercial construction, and beaten or killed if they protest; any meagre payment offered to them is usually stolen by corrupt local officials;
  • millions of Chinese who are sent without trial to slave labour camps, where they are tortured and forced to work long days producing consumer goods. Recent product recalls highlight the dangers of these goods to the public, which, for higher profits, often incorporate toxic ingredients;
  • China‚Äôs continued forced abortion and sterilization program to enforce a ‚Äò‚ÄòOne Child‚Äô‚Äô policy in its population control measures;
  • China imprisons more reporters, and executes more prisoners, than any other country in the world;
  • the Chinese regime supports rogue regimes such as, Burma, North Korea, Cambodia, and Iran, and funds and arms the Sudanese-government-supported Janjaweed militia, which is committing genocide in Darfur where millions have been murdered and millions more displaced from their homes;
  • stringent internet censorship and public surveillance with technology supplied by western companies, enables widespread monitoring and suppression of free speech

Please do the right thing now and condemn human rights abuses in China to help ensure that the 2008 Olympic Games are no longer used by the Chinese regime as a political tool to further entrench its control over the Chinese and Tibetan people as well as the rogue regimes that it supports.

As late as the hour is, there can be no excuse not to act; please consider adding your voice to the international outcry, and participate in the alternative Human Rights Torch Relay [http://en.epochtimes.com/news/7-8-10/58600.html] when it arrives in your area.

The Olympics and crimes against humanity cannot coexist in China!

The whole world is watching.

Sincerely,

[your name]
