The rock band Light Club has been busy, touring with the Human Rights Torch Relay (HRTR). HRTR is an activists’ relay, with an anti-Olympic torch. Its purpose is to point out — and its slogan says — that “The Olympics and crimes against humanity cannot co-exist in China.”

Five Chinese students in Australia are facing charges and deportation due to scuffles in the April 24 Olympic Torch Relay event, reported Australian Chinese Website, Snowpear, on April 29, 2008. Chinese students are hoping the matter would be resolved via diplomatic channels. Apparently Chinese Embassy and Consulates in Australia are unwilling to be involved stating they have nothing to do with the incident.

Boxun reports on April 14 that various Chinese organizations in Australia are being organized to circulate an urgent letter calling on Chinese in various Australian cities to help [Chinese people in] Canberra and support the April 24 Olympic Torch relay in Canberra. The report published the whole letter issued by the Australian Chinese Youth Exchange Promotion Association. The letter claims that there will be several hundred protesters composed of “Tibetan Independence” and other “anti-China” forces trying to sabotage the event. “These people rehearsed to humiliate China using the torch to light cigarettes and toilet paper, and using extinguishers to put out the Torch,” says the letter. The letter detailed the schedules for free transportation from various locations and promised to provide free meals. The report questions who pays for the free meals and free transportation.

With the spread of 3G technology, China’s wireless video surveillance technology is migrating to a new Internet communication standard from traditional CDMA technology. At the China Police Expo 2008 in Beijing, various new surveillance products were on display. According to a Xinhua news report, the boom of this industry was because of the government’s strategy of creating a “harmonious society” and the Olympics Security Operations. Exhibitors at the Expo included companies based in China, Italy, U.K., Germany, Singapore, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Czech, New Zealand, U.S., Russia, and France.

The Alamo Plaza will be the site of a Human Rights Torch Relay rally on May 3rd. Bringing an awareness of China’s continuing human rights violations to Texas in a peaceful way, the HRTR torch relay provides an event for all groups to voice their concerns about the Chinese regime’s human rights crimes.

The White Plains Holocaust memorial at the Garden of Remembrance will be an appropriate site for the Human RightsTorch Ceremony on May 3. Following the Torch ceremony at the Garden, participants can take part in a torch run through White Plains, ending at a rally at Westchester County Courthouse Plaza, at the statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A downtown Detroit Torch Event features a rally and speeches in Grand Circus Park followed by a torch walk through the downtown area. For those who would like to have their voices be heard, there will be petitions to sign.
