DETROIT — A small number of human rights activists appalled by what they call abuses by the Chinese government, or supported by that government, protested Saturday at Grand Circus Park in Detroit.

The peaceful protest of about 40 included a walk around the blocks that encompassed the park.

Event to raise awareness of human rights in China

The Global Human Rights Torch will “arrive” in Winnipeg this Friday, and along with it will come demands for the Chinese government to improve its human rights record ahead of this summer’s Olympics.

“Human Rights Torch Relay” arrives at Halifax, the first of its Canadian leg, on May 4, 2008.

The Human Rights Torch Relay (HRTR), initiated by Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (CIPFG) on August 9th 2007 in Athens, has been touring many cities across Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Africa and North America. It arrived at the Halifax, an east coast city of Nava Scotia, Canada on May 4th 2008. It was well received by local supporters with events such as welcoming ceremony, torch walk and rally with music, aimed at condemning the human rights violation of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with the message: “The Olympics and crimes against humanity cannot coexist in China.”

Canadian MP Alexa MacDonough gave a public speech at the welcoming ceremony and lit the torch on behalf of Canada. MP Mike Savage, renown human rights lawyer David Matas, and Halifax City Councillor Dawn Sloane representing the Mayor of Halifax and City Council also gave speeches on the rally. Numbers of bands, musicians and singers from City of Halifax and Nova Scotia also performed on the rally for HRTR.
